Pet's First Veterinary Visit

Establishing Comprehensive Care at Your Pet's First Veterinary Visit

Of course, the number-one human in your new cat or dog’s life is you! The second-most important person should be his or her veterinarian. Whether your new furball comes from a reputable breeder or an animal shelter, it’s essential, when you adopt a new puppy, kitten, or older animal, to schedule an appointment with a trusted veterinarian right away to establish the veterinary-client-patient-relationship (VCPR).
During a first visit, we not only screen your pet for potential existing health problems but establish a health baseline and comprehensive care plan for your new pet. Having a baseline and ongoing relationship with a patient is an essential component to the later detection, diagnosis, and treatment of medical conditions.

What to Expect at a First Visit

The main objectives of a pet’s first veterinary appointment are to establish a health baseline and to screen your new pet for illness and chronic medical conditions. The first appointment also lets your pet become more familiar with our staff and facility.
Our veterinarian will perform a thorough physical examination from whiskers to tail, which will include the following:
  • Your cat or dog will be weighed.
  • We’ll listen to their lungs and heart.
  • We’ll examine your pet’s ears, nose, eyes, mouth, teeth, feet, genitalia, skin, and coat.
  • We’ll palpate their abdomens and lymph nodes.
  • We’ll recognize muscle mass and hernias, posture and signs of orthopedic and neurologic health

In addition to these standard first visit examinations, we might also request that you come to the appointment with a feces sample for screening your new pet for worms. Depending on the pet’s history, we might also run a blood panel or urinalysis to check for signs of contagious disease.
During your pet’s first examination, vaccinations and/or boosters will be given, if needed, and we’ll discuss your pet’s future vaccine schedule and care with you, too.

First Step During a Lifetime of Wellness

Your new pet’s first veterinary visit is only the beginning of a lifetime of wellness care. Designed to treat your pet specifically based on breed, age, condition, and medical history, Well Pet Plans offer pets comprehensive preventative care and screening for common medical conditions on a regular schedule at a set, discounted price for you. These plans vary in scope but can include all veterinary exams, core vaccinations, and an established schedule of routine lab work, X-rays, dental cleaning and specific vaccine boosters.
