How to Recognize a Pet Emergency

Some emergencies are obvious. Car accidents, chocolate ingestion, or exposure to poison all necessitate a prompt visit to the veterinarian. Sometimes, however, it can be difficult to tell the difference between a sick pet and a pet in a life-threatening situation.

If your pet displays the following signs and symptoms, he or she should see a veterinarian immediately:

Collapsing
Extreme weakness
Difficulty breathing
Uncontrolled bleeding
Severe cough
Persistent diarrhea and/or vomiting
Lack of bowel movements
Serious injury or trauma
Loss of appetite and/or extreme lethargy persisting for more than 24 hours
Heat exhaustion
Repetitive or lengthy seizures

When in doubt, contact our office or bring your pet in for treatment and observation.

What to Do During a Life-Threatening Emergency

Although no one wants to imagine their pet in a life-threatening situation, it can happen. It’s important for every pet owner to have a plan in place for a potential pet emergency. Keep our veterinary clinic’s phone number on hand and have a plan in place in case an emergency occurs after hours. Our veterinarian can also recommend local, after-hours emergency veterinary clinics.

If your pet has ingested a potentially poisonous substance, bring your pet to the clinic and contact the ASPCA poison control helpline. They might charge a service fee.

If you think your pet’s having an emergency, contact us right away. We’ll provide instructions over the phone to stabilize your pet during transport to our clinic. It’s then essential that you get your pet emergency veterinary care as soon as possible.

After-Hours Emergency Hospitals
