Dermatology primarily treats issues with your pet’s skin, nails, or hair. Dogs and cats commonly suffer from allergies, rashes, parasites, and other issues.

Signs Your Pet Should See a Veterinarian For Dermatology Care

If your pet is suffering from a dermatological or allergy problem, you might notice some of the following signs and symptoms:

Excessive itching/scratching

Biting or licking a particular area
Frequent ear infections
Malodorous ears
Red, inflamed paws

Hives or rash

Lumps and bumps on or beneath your pet’s skin
Excessive shedding or patchy fur
Excessive dander or scabbed skin

Diagnosing and Treating Your Pet

Sometimes, diagnosing a dermatological condition is as simple as spotting fleas and prescribing a medicated flea bath. Other times, it can be a much more complex process. There are actually hundreds of different allergies and dermatological conditions that can potentially cause trouble for cats and dogs. Some of the most common causes of dermatological problems include:

Allergies (food and/or environmental)
Bacterial infections
External parasites
Malodorous ears
Feline acne
Fungal infestations
Hormonal imbalances
Immune disorders
Ringworm

Skin cancer

With so many possible causes, achieving an accurate diagnosis and being able to address the underlying cause of your pet’s symptoms can be a fairly lengthy process.

What to Expect During a Dermatology Appointment

We’ll first provide treatment to relieve symptoms. We’ll then begin the process of determining a diagnosis. This includes a complete physical examination, plus blood tests to look for signs of identifiable diseases and to rule out other concerns.

If it’s determined that your pet has an allergy, we’ll help you begin the process of determining whether it’s seasonal, environmental, or a food allergy. Cats and dogs can be allergic to things like pollen, dust, smoke, perfumes, mold, and certain ingredients in their foods. Addressing your pet’s allergies might include taking steps to control your pet’s environment, introducing dietary restrictions, or making other lifestyle changes.

At Tanglewilde Veterinary Clinic, we understand the importance of proper dermatological care for your pets. While we do not have a board-certified dermatologist on staff, we do see dermatology cases and strive to provide the best care possible for your furry friends.

However, we also recognize that some dermatological cases may be too complex for us to handle. In such instances, we refer our clients to board-certified dermatologists who have the expertise and specialized training to manage these cases.

We remain committed to providing the highest level of care for your pets and are always happy to answer any questions you may have about our dermatology services.
