What to Expect Before Your Pet’s Procedure

For the safety of pets and the success of surgical procedures, pets must be sedated with general anesthesia. We use only high-quality sedative medications and screen every pet (except in the case of emergency surgery) prior to undergoing anesthesia. Surgical screening entails a comprehensive physical examination and a blood test to ensure your pet is healthy enough to undergo anesthesia. Blood tests check the health of your pet’s vital organs to rule out the presence of medical conditions that could be unsafe with anesthesia.

Surgery under general anesthesia is much safer on an empty stomach. For the safety of your pet, we ask that food be withheld for at least 12 hours prior to your pet’s surgery. Usually, this means your pet can have dinner the evening before surgery but should not be fed breakfast.
