How to Recognize a Pet Emergency
Some emergencies are obvious. Car accidents, chocolate ingestion, or exposure to poison all necessitate a prompt visit to the veterinarian. Sometimes, however, it can be difficult to tell the difference between a sick pet and a pet in a life-threatening situation.
If your pet displays the following signs and symptoms, he or she should see a veterinarian immediately:
- Collapsing
- Extreme weakness
- Difficulty breathing
- Uncontrolled bleeding
- Severe cough
- Persistent diarrhea and/or vomiting
- Lack of bowel movements
- Serious injury or trauma
- Loss of appetite and extreme lethargy persisting for more than 24 hours
- Heat exhaustion
- Repetitive or lengthy seizures
When in doubt, contact our office or bring your pet in for treatment and observation.
What to do During a Life-Threatening Emergency
In the event of a life-threatening emergency, it’s essential to have a plan in place. Keep our veterinary clinic’s phone number readily available and familiarize yourself with the nearest after-hours emergency veterinary clinics. If your pet ingests a potentially toxic substance, contact us immediately and consider contacting the ASPCA poison control helpline for guidance.

After-Hours Emergency Hospitals
If you suspect your pet is experiencing an emergency outside of our regular business hours, don’t hesitate to contact us for guidance. We’ll provide instructions over the phone to stabilize your pet until they can receive emergency veterinary care. Your pet’s health and safety are our top priorities, and we’re here to assist you every step of the way.
